Coleman Bluecats
5 - 0
Bluecats "Blank" Grape Creek, 35-0
--By Brett Autry
The Coleman Bluecat defense allowed a big "goose egg" Friday night at Grape Creek. The Bluecats held the
Eagles rushing attack to negative yards for the games, and only allowed 56 total yards for the game.
Meanwhile the Bluecats rolled up 255 yards on the ground and 73 in the air to win their second district contest
of 2007.
The first quarter was fairly slow with only one score recorded in that time frame. The Bluecats used a ball
control offense from the start and used their time wisely, and effectively, while on offense. Their first scoring
drive of the night covered 61 yards and ate up much of the clock, before Corbin Brooks scooted in from 19
yards out for the initial touchdown of the game. Oscar Villeda's PAT was, as always, good, and the Bluecats
led 7-0 with 8:59 remaining in the first.
The turning point of the game, if that can be said, came on Coleman's next touchdown, when Colton Buzzard
was trapped way behind the line by three Grape Creek defenders on what looked like what was going to be a
big loss. Buzzard escaped one tackle, juked a couple of defenders then raced twenty-five yards for Coleman's
second TD of the evening.....a backbreaker for the Eagles. Coach Buzzard said of the play, "That's one of
those plays where you go, 'No, no, no---good job. You can't draw that up." "True Toe"
Villeda's PAT was good for a 14-0 lead.
Coleman used the airways for their next score, when Glen Edington gathered in a 10-yard pass from Buzzard
for the third Bluecat TD of the night. "True Toe's" kick was good once more for a 21-0 lead at halftime.
Coleman's offense didn't score again for the rest of the evening.
But that didn't matter much. Their special teams, and defense would do that job for them.
With 4:12 left in the third quarter, Bronson Buzzard returned an Eagle punt 52 yards for the Bluecats' fourth
TD of the night, and along with "True Toe's" kick, the Cats' lead was up to 28-0.
Then, with 2:22 left in the third, Zach Doyle returned a Grape Creek interception 34 yards for the final
touchdown of the evening. "True Toe's" PAT made the final score 35-0 in favor of the fifth-ranked Coleman
Bluecats.
Grape Creek's quarterbacks had a forgettable night, being sacked five times and fumbled two snaps, and had
four interceptions. In seven plays near the end of the third quarter, the Eagles were sacked twice, fumbled a
snap for lost yardage, and gave up two touchdowns. The Eagles didn't record a first down for the first 17
minutes of the game.
Eagles head coach Brad Bowden said, "Bottom line is, Coleman is a dang good football team. They were
better than us tonight."
Coleman was led by Bronson Buzzard's 14 carries for 90 yards on the night, while brother Colton had a rough
night passing, completing for of thirteen for 73 yards, and registering two interceptions.
Coleman improved to 5-0 on the season, and 2-0 in district and will face Wall next week, while Grape Creek
falls to 2-3 overall, and 0-2 in district and will face Early next Friday.
