Mattie Amanda (Janie) Davis was born March 28, 1933, the daughter of Robert Coffee and Myrtle Annie Jacobs Davis. She grew up and attended school in Rising Star. She married Earl F. Davis on February 4, 1957 in Lovington, New Mexico. She was a housewife and a Baptist. | Jim Jones age 66 from Dallas, TX passed away and went to be with the Lord on November 27, 2007 at his home in Dallas , Texas . Jimmy was born on November 24, 1941 in Dallas and moved to Tennessee with his family when he was five. He was raised in Memphis , attended Castle Heights Military Academy and The University of Tennessee. He served his country with the U. S. Air Force. On May 28, 1961 Jimmy married Angela Regina Hatfield in Houston and they celebrated 41 years of marriage. He moved back to Texas in 1965 where he owned and operated an auto parts business. He is survived by many loving family members, including his wife, Angie: son and daughter-in-law, Clay and Ingrid and their children Avery and Ethan; son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Angie who are expecting their first child in the spring. Also survived by sisters Linda Hubbard and Judi Jones and nephews Christopher Jones, Jason Hubbard, Daniel Hubbard, and Paul Hubbard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Jim Jones and sister Christy Sue Hay. Jimmy had a wonderfully fun sense of humor which endeared him to family and friends, and he will be missed so very much. Services will be in Santa Anna , Texas on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at noon at Henderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Santa Anna Cemetery. Before graduating he traveled to California and worked there until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on the USS Aaron Ward during World War II being discharge in 1945. He then returned to college graduating from Texas A & M in 1948. After graduating he worked as Taylor Co Assistant County Agent. He married Mary Conley in 1948 and she preceded him in death in 1956. In 1950 he moved to Coleman as County Agent. On September 24, 1958 Huck married Rebecca Baird Horne in Abilene, Texas and they celebrated forty five years of marriage. Kenneth (Mickey) Smith was born October 19, 1934 in Coleman County, Texas, a son of the late Arthur Lee Smith and Hattie Mae Sorrells Smith. He grew up in Coleman where he attended school. On October 13, 1972 he married Gussie Whitaker in Brownwood. Mickey was a heavy equipment operator and worked in the oil field. He was Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Gussie Smith of Coleman; two sons, Randy Smith of Brownwood and Bryan Raney of Lovington, NM; one step-son, Ronnie Aycox of Brownwood; five grandsons, four granddaughters, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter; one sister, Nina Aydelotte of Coleman; one aunt, Ila Todd of Coleman; a number of nieces and nephews. | Charles Wesley Pitts, Jr. left this life on October 2, 2007 at his home in Bishop, TX at the age of 90 with his beloved wife, Lida O. Pitts, at his side. Charles was born in Coleman, TX on March 24, 1917 to Charles Wesley and Clement Dibroll Pitts. At the age of 18 months he had polio which left his right leg smaller and shorter than his left leg, but that was never a handicap to Charles. He attended school in Coleman, TX through high school. After high school he worked with his father on the family farm until 1944 at which time he joined the Air Force as a mechanic with the West Wing of the A.T.C. He remained in the Air Force until the end of World War II. In 1951 Charles moved to Bishop, TX and started work at Celanese where he worked until he retired 32 years later on November 1, 1982 as a project engineer. The major influence in Charles’ life was his grandfather, a devout Methodist, who brought him up on the Puritan ethic of hard work, honesty, and moral integrity. Charles remained true to these principles the remainder of his life. Charles was raised a Methodist, but joined the Baptist church with his first wife, Georgia shortly after moving to Bishop in 1951. Charles loved the Lord, and unless he was ill or out of town, you could always count on him being in Sunday School and church on Sundays. Charles married Georgia Sparkman in 1946, and lived with her for 38 years until her death. In 1984 he married Lida Oliver with whom he shared 23 wonderful years until his death on October 2, 2007. Charles loved life, good food, traveling, and his many friends and family. He was a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. His death will leave a large vacancy in our lives. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wesley and Clement Pitts, his first wife, Georgia Sparkman Pitts, and his sisters, Elizabeth Wagner and Jane Atchley. He is survived by his wife, Lida Oliver Pitts, his stepchildren, Ann Kaiser, Lane Garrett, Edwin Garrett, and Celeste Garrett, his sister, Kate Phillips, and many, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Friday, October 5, 2007 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. Harry was born June 13, 1909 in Coleman County, Texas to the late James Henry and Tula Amanda Pitts Crews. He attended Bowen Schools and graduated in 1927 from Santa Anna High School. On June 10, 1934 Harry married Margaret Roberts in Coleman and they have celebrated seventy three years of marriage. He was a lifetime resident of Coleman County and has resided in Santa Anna since 1945. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, Santa Anna Lions Club and Boy Scout leader for many years. Harry was a carpenter and owned and operated Santa Anna Lumber for many years. | CLYDE DIXON (TOMMY) ALLEN, 90, of Coleman, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 at his residence. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 Wednesday at the United Christian and Presbyterian Church, 1609 S. Commercial Avenue, Coleman with Dr. George B. Gordon officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the church. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Clyde Dixon (Tommy) Allen was born April 24, 1917 in Hillsboro, Texas, the third son of Thurman Jackson Allen and Myrtle Olga Tomlinson Allen. He grew up in Coleman, graduating from Coleman High School in 1933. After graduating from Texas Christian University in 1937 he returned to Coleman and joined his father in their insurance business, Allen and Allen. He volunteered for the US Navy in 1942, serving his country in both the European and Pacific theaters, receiving the Bronze Star for valor. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lieutenant. He returned to Coleman after the war, rejoining the insurance agency and resuming his involvement in community affairs. He married Doris Adelle McIntosh in Brownwood on April 10, 1955. Mr. Allen was an active member of First Christian Church (now United Christian and Presbyterian), serving as Chairman of the Church Board on many occasions, and as an Elder, adult Sunday School teacher, and choir member. Mr. Allen was on the Board of Holiday Hill Nursing Home for 55 years, serving as secretary for most of that time. He was a founder of the Coleman County Foundation and served on the board of the Abilene Foundation. He was instrumental in re-organizing the local hospital, and served as the first chairman of the board of Coleman County Medical Center. He also served on the Coleman County Industrial Board and was a member of the Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife, Doris Allen of Coleman; son, Jack Allen of McLean, Virginia; daughter, Dorothy Kellogg and son-in-law, James Kellogg of Alexandria, Virginia; grandsons, Allen and Stephen Kellogg of Alexandria; sisters-in-law, Dorothy McIntosh of Brownwood and Doris J. Allen of Houston; two nieces Patricia White of Austin and Suzanne Gordon of Kansas City, Kansas, and their families. | Jack Cosby, age 75, of Coleman, died Sunday, September 30, 1932 in San Angelo. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, at Elm Street Church of Christ. Jack Cosby was born June 23, 2007 in Hugo, Oklahoma, a son of Jack William Cosby and Edna McDade Cosby Holly. He grew up in Hugo and moved to Mineral Wells where he graduated from high school. Mr. Cosby served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. Following his service time, he graduated from Texas Tech University. On July 19, 1958 he married Sydney Smith in Childress, Texas. Mr. Cosby taught school at Pyote and was a principal at Sanderson, Talpa-Centennial and Panther Creek. He also coached girl's basketball and peewee basketball. Mr. Cosby was a referee for basketball for a number of years. In his retirement, he was a funeral home assistant at Stevens Funeral Home. He was a member of Elm Street Church of Christ where he served as a song leader and elder and taught Sunday School. | JEAN DAY HORNE, age 95, of Coleman, died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Coleman County Medical Center. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Jean's life will be held 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 23 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Miller officiating. There will be a reception at the fellowship hall following the service. She was born August 4, 1912 in Plainview, Texas, a daughter of Clifford Hood Day and Ada Lee Wingo Day. She grew up in the Panhandle of Texas and graduated from West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M). Jean moved to Coleman in 1939 as the Home Demonstration Agent. She married Robert A. Horne on July 26, 1942 in Bryan, Texas and he preceded her in death on April 7, 1984. In the 1960's Jean received her certification as a dietician and served area nursing homes. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was the teacher for the Dunson Sunday School Class for 35 years. She also sang in the Chancel Choir for many years. She served as secretary and other offices for the District United Methodist Women. Survivors include one son, Robert Horne of Coleman; one daughter, Marilyn Angela Lorz; five grandchildren, Joshua M. Lorz of Coos Bay, Washington, Jesse D. She was a member of the Northside Baptist Church and was a homemaker and true momma, an avid bird watcher, lover of animals, a church pianist, a volunteer at Holiday Hill, and a Red Hatter. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Ann Martin Bowerly and Patricia Lynn Martin Fuller both of the Houston area; one son, Irvin Wayne Martin of Hobbs, New Mexico; an aunt, Ruth Lagow of Lake Coleman; two sisters, Myrtle Christine Martin and La Juan Rose Joyce; and one brother, Alfred Eugene Norris of the Talpa area; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. |

| Margaret Louise (Mrs. R. G.) Brookshier of Talpa passed away Sunday, September 9, 2007 at Ballinger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was 85 and had lived in Runnels and Coleman Counties all her life. Louise was born June 30, 1922 in Blanton Community in Runnels County to James Amos and Arrie (Wood) Foreman. She married R. G. “Gordon” Brookshier on April 22, 1939 in Paint Rock. She was a devoted housewife and also proved to be an able assistant to her husband in ranching and farming until he retired fully in 2003. At that time the operation was turned over to daughter, Carol Brookshier Jones, making four generations of Brookshiers in ranching in Runnels County. Louise was a former member of First Baptist Church of Ballinger and a current member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Talpa. She was a member of Women’s Missionary Union at both churches and a member of Runnels County Farm Bureau. For the last three years she had been a resident of Ballinger Health Care and Rehab Center (formerly Heritage Oaks Nursing Center). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Gordon, on February 12, 2005. Her parents, her brothers and sisters, and a daughter, Judy Brookshier, also preceded her. Mrs. Brookshier is survived by her daughter, Carol Brookshier Jones of Talpa; grandson, Shon Jones and his wife, Melissa, of San Angelo; granddaughter, Brooke Jones of Sonora; great-grandsons, Xavier Nino of Talpa, and Shon V. Jones, Jr. of San Angelo; great-granddaughter, Taryn Jones of San Angelo. A sister-in-law, Margie England Brookshier of El Paso, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. | Aleene Hamilton Jones passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at Coleman Healthcare Center in Coleman, Texas. Graveside funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 6 at White Chapel Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. She was born August 25, 1916 to Arch Hamilton and Maggie Netherton Hamilton at White Chapel community of Coleman County. She was married to Thomas Weaver Jones in White Chapel on August 22, 1934. The couple worked and lived in several states during the time Mr. Jones was employed as a construction worker. Mrs. Jones and her husband owned and operated a motel in Moab, Utah before moving to Coleman in 1992. She was predeceased by one sister, Agatha Cash, and six brothers, Johnny Hamilton, Durwood Hamilton, Harold Hamilton, Randall Hamilton, Weldon Hamilton and Dudley Hamilton. Survivors include nieces and nephews: Patricia Campbell, Sandra Lester, Mike Hamilton, Jim Hamilton, Elaine Dixon, Gary Cash and Judi Hamilton. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Estelle Hamilton, and several other nieces, nephews and other relatives. | Mrs. Luberta Preas, age 94, of Silver Valley, died Saturday, August 25, 2007 at her residence. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 27, 2007 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. She was born Elizabeth Luberta Cox on March 3, 1913 in Comanche County, Texas, a daughter of Jesse Johnson Cox and Willie Irene Pate Cox. She moved with her family to Coleman County as a small child where they lived in White Chapel and Glen Cove area. She attended school at Anderson. On December 4, 1931 she married Curtis Arnold Preas in Coleman County and he preceded her in death on May 16, 1969. She was a homemaker and a member of North Coleman Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald J. and Virginia Preas of N. Richland Hills, Cecil Gene and Cynthia Preas of Midland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Irene and M. H. Gildon of Rockport, Brenda and Ervin Wells of Silver Valley; one sister, Sadie Cox of Odessa; one brother, Cecil R. Cox of Odessa; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; son-in-law, Robert Haupert of Farmington, NM; daughter-in-law, Kittie Koukalik of Marana, Arizona; a family friend, Wanda Corder of Silver Valley. | Stephen Jack Lowe, 61, of Brownwood, died Friday, August 24, 2007 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood with Bill Allen officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman. Stephen Jack Lowe was born October 24, 1945 in Brownwood, the son of John Lowe and Nyo Lefner Lowe. He grew up in California, graduating from Hemet High School in 1963. He graduated from San Bernadino Valley Junior College with an Associate of Arts Degree in 1966 and from the University of Montana at Missoula with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1974. After graduation, he was hired by the New York Mets Baseball Organization in their Minor League System as Athletic Trainer for eight years. He drove for Mayflower Transit Company for 21 years, retiring in 2003. He was a Baptist, had a great love for sports and traveling the world. He will be missed by all. Stephen is survived by his mother, Nyo Lowe of Brownwood; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert F. and Carolyn Lowe of Brownwood; uncle and aunt, Dwight and Glenna Lefner of Bethel, Alaska; nephew, Robert E. Lowe, and wife Jeanna, of Coleman; nieces, Nancy Trowbridge of Brownwood, Katherine Redmon of Burgin, Kentucky; three great nieces four great nephews. | Sandra (Sandy) Susanne Humphrey, age 62 of Kerrville Texas, passed away on August 14, 2007 in a local hospital. She was preceded by her parents Ruby Estelle Humphrey and John Duane Humphrey. She is survived by her brother, Gerald Duane Humphrey, his wife Linda Kay Humphrey of Spring Texas and their children Wesley Humphrey and Tera Humphrey both of Dallas, Texas. Sandy was born in Coleman, Texas on July 15, 1945. She moved to Kerrville in 1966 and has been an active member and leader of the First Baptist Church of Kerrville for 41 years, serving on numerous church committees as well as being a long term member of their church choir. She worked in the Kerrville banking industry and most recently with the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce as their Communication officer and event planner. She gave all the energy and love she had to her family, her church and her community. Visitation will be held Friday, August 17, 2007, 5-7 PM at Grimes Funeral Chapels, 728 Jefferson in Kerrville, Texas. | Mr. G.W. Slayton, 68 years of age, passed away at his residence in Early, Texas on Thursday, August 9, 2007. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery. Charles passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at Abilene Regional Medical Center. He was born on October 8, 1936 in Coleman to Albert and Lilly Aleene Herd Breedlove. He attended Coleman schools and married Nita Traylor on December 21, 1957 in First Baptist Church, Coleman. Charles worked for Goodyear Tire Co. as a store manager for several years before moving to Austin and purchasing his own Firestone location. He owned and operated the Perry Rose Firestone store in the Capital Plaza shopping center for a number of years before retiring. He later owned an aircraft refinishing business before moving to Lake Brownwood and purchasing Don Johnson Realtors. He later sold the real estate business to Mark Campbell, retiring for the third time Charles was a member of First Baptist Church and Dr. Robert Smith's Sunday School Class. While in Austin Charles taught a high school Sunday School Class for many years at Allandale Baptist Church. Charles is survived by his wife, Nita Breedlove of Lake Brownwood, two sons, Greg Breedlove and wife Janet of Taylor, Texas and Scott Breedlove of south Texas, a granddaughter, Ami Mayfield and husband Jonathan of London, England, and a number of cousins. She also worked with the Girls' Softball Association as a coach for many years. Sherry was very instrumental in getting the first girls' softball park built. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. | William Roy "Bill" Cole, age 81, of Gouldbusk, died Thursday, August 9, 2007 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Bill Cole was born December 28, 1925 in Bremerton, Washington, a son of Roy Walter Cole and Ruth Madden Cole. He grew up in Washington and attended school there. Bill served in the U. S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper. He retired from Qwest (formerly Pacific Northwest Bell) after working there for many years and living in the Bremerton, Washington area. In 1980 he married Charlene Bates in Reno, Nevada and they moved to Gouldbusk in 1985. He was Methodist and a member of the Elks Lodge. He was a scuba diver. | Mary “Sissy” Harvard went to be with the Lord on July 28, 2007 after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. Sissy was born to Russell and Lillie Allen on May 12, 1933 in Leaday, Coleman County, Texas. She spent years in the professional rodeo circuit and was a founding member of the Girl’s Rodeo Association. Sissy married John B. Harvard II on June 24, 1960 and they were married for 40 years and had five children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Lewis and Lawrence Allen. She is survived by her children - daughters Marcia Harvard of Midland, Mona and husband Clay Stone of Midland and Mitzi and husband Jim Truelock of Eastland; son, John Harvard III of Midland; and daughter, Rachel Harvard and companion Connie Spahn of Midland. Burial will follow in Coleman Cemetery. Mr. Payne passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at a Galveston hospital after a long illness. Alonzo Howard Payne was born September 21, 1962 to the parentage of Emmett and Mary Ann Baker Payne. He attended the public schools in Coleman and was a graduate of Coleman High School where he excelled in basketball. He attended Waco Community College. He had been a chef at various establishments. Called a “Special Child” by his family, he was an artist who was mild-mannered and well-loved by his family. He had often baby-sat his nieces and nephews. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Emmett and Mary Ann Payne of Coleman; two sisters, Doris Jean Larkin and husband Tommy Larkin of Pioneer, TX and Kimala Sampson and husband Wayne Sampson of Rhode Island; grandfather, David Jackson of Coleman; four nieces, Charlene Payne, Na’Talya Payne, Bridgette Padgitt and Courtney Larkin; two nephews, Emmett Lavell Brown and Manuel Valles; four great-nieces, Brijonae Morris, Carmelia Kincaid, Sierra Brown and Samara Padgitt; and a host of relatives and many, many friends. | Lillian Maverick Padgitt August 1, 1912 - July 8, 2007 Born to Lillian Williams and Albert Maverick Jr. at Sunshine Ranch in San Antonio, Lillian Maverick Padgitt was a direct descendant of Samuel Augustus Maverick, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Rancher, homemaker and historic preservationist, Lillian lived a full loving life and was always ready to “talk about Texas.” Lillian graduated from Main Avenue High School and Westmoreland College (Trinity University) in San Antonio. She married Coleman County rancher James Thomas Padgitt, Jr. on December 6, 1932. Lillian and Jim divided their time between the Padgitt Ranch on the banks of the Colorado River and San Antonio, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary before Jim’s death in 1983. Some of Lillian’s greatest interests were the history of San Antonio and its unique architecture. She served as President of the San Antonio Conservation Society, President of the Alamo Mission Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Regent of the Captain William Buckner Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the founding chairman of the Conservation Society’s Las Posadas in 1966 and chairman for the first 25 years of Anticuchos at A Night in Old San Antonio. She also enjoyed memberships in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the Battle of Flowers Association, Live Oak Garden Club, Military Civilian, The Argyle and was an early board member of The National Trust for Historic Preservation. Lillian is survived by two daughters, Lillian Padgitt Morris of San Antonio, Texas and Jane Maverick Padgitt of Leaday, Texas, her seven grandchildren Catherine Morris Helland and husband Hans, James Padgitt Morris and wife Sally, Hannah Day Morris, Hal Goggan Kuntz II and wife Barbara, Peter Maverick, Ellen Day Dotson, Byrd Padgitt Sowell, six great grandchildren and countless Maverick relatives. Lillian was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lieutenant Colonel James T. Padgitt, Jr., ANG WWII, daughter Willie Day Padgitt Kuntz, three sisters Jane Lewis McMillan, Amelia Epler Nolen, and Mary Adams Lambie, brother Albert Maverick III and devoted son-in-law Robert Selig Morris. | Thomas M. Hays, Jr. age 83 of Santa Anna, Texas passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at 5:30 AM at the Brownwood Regional MedicalCenter. He was born Thomas Myron Hays, Jr. on June 2, 1924 in Santa Anna to the late Thomas Myron and Anna Belle Andrews Hays. He was raised in Santa Anna graduating from Santa Anna High School in 1942. Thomas continued his education at the University of Texas, UT atArlington, University of Georgia and University of Houston. He married Evis Inez Edwards in Bogart Georgia on May 14, 1943 and they later separated. On September 19, 1974 Thomas married Ruby Faye Eidson in Norfolk, Virginia and they celebrated 28 years of marriage with Ruby preceding him in death in 2002. On September 6, 2003 he married Margie Petross Smith In Comanche. Thomas was a Captain in the US Navy retiring in 1974 following 32 years of service. He served his country during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the Masonic Mountain Lodge #661 in Santa Anna and member of the First United Methodist Church of Comanche. Interment 4:30 PM graveside at Santa Anna Cemetery. | Willie Lane Parrott, 97, of San Angelo passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007 at a local care center. Graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Coleman City Cemetery with Harold Watkins officiating. Johnson’s Funeral Home of San Angelo was in charge of arrangements. Willie Lane Brown Parrott, beloved by her family in her life and death. She was born the only child of Phoena Brown and Will Brown on January 15, 1910. She traveled with her parents until the age of 6 and then settled in Coleman with her mother and grandparents. She graduated from Coleman High School and then got her B.A. and Masters Degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood. Lane married Ralph Holloway Parrott on July 30, 1947 in San Angelo. She dedicated her life to teaching students of all ages but spent most of her teaching in elementary school. Lane spent time teaching in Valera, Christoval and San Angelo. It was the desire of her heart to teach all her students to read, to love learning and to know the enjoyment of doing their best. She wanted her students to know love and discipline. Mrs. Parrott loved her family and was dedicated to teaching them her many talents of sewing, cooking and quilt making. One of Lane’s favorite possessions were her pets, her Pekingese dogs. One of her bright spots was her love of music. She loved to play the piano and sing. She loved to attend church and cherished all the old hymns. She will be missed by her family but she will be enjoying the presence of Jesus and His Angels and her hosts of family and friends. Survivors include daughter, Susie Roop and husband Dusty of San Angelo; granddaughter, Rebekah Anderson and her husband, Kraig of San Angelo and great-granddaughter, Katie Smart of San Angelo. | Leonard Ehrler, Jr. of New Braunfels passed away on May 25, 2007, at the age of 78. He was born in Coleman, TX and graduated from Coleman High School in 1947 where he also grew up and was an Eagle Scout. Leonard received a football scholarship and was a Junior College All American at Austin College in 1950. He coached High School Football in Slaton, TX and Crosbyton, TX in the mid to late 50's. Leonard earned a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture/Park Administration at Texas Tech in the early 60's. He worked in the Parks Department in Lubbock and Denton, TX and was Director of Parks and Recreation for the Cities of Boulder, CO and Austin, TX. Leonard was the former President of the Texas Recreation and Park Society and the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. Leonard was preceded in death by his son Russ Ehrler. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Sally Hamana; sons, Carl Ehrler and Mark Wilson and Lisa; daughter-in-law, Pat Ehrler; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 16, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at the New Braunfels Presbyterian Church in New Braunfels, TX. James Cullins was born December 1, 1924 in Coleman County, Texas, a son of the late George A. Cullins and Dillie Edith Pridemore Cullins. From 1943-1946 he served in the United States Army in the 342nd Armored Field Artilley. On May 1, 1949 he married Tishie "Speedy" Lackey in San Angelo and she preceded him in death in May 26, 2001. James was an oilfield driller, living in Ozona from 1972-1979, then moving to Gaines County. He came to Coleman in 1988 and moved to a Brownwood nursing home two years ago. He was Baptist. Survivors include two sisters, Edith Deland of Ozona and Melba Whiteley of Brownwood; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Coleman Cullins of Orange, California and Zella Cullins of Mesa, Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews. | Karl K. “Korky” Steffens, Col. USAF Retired, age 90 and a lifelong resident of Brady, Texas passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2007 in Brady. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today (Thursday), July 5, 2007 at the Brady Presbyterian Church with Rev. Brian Wiggins officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Brady. Pallbearers will be Ted Archer, Jack Roberts, Skip Pries, Ed Carrithers, Dr. J.H. Allen and Dick Winters. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Roberts, Dr. Richard Winters, Gerald Yarborough, Charlie Dye, Joe McDonough and L.V. Ruffin. Arrangements are under the direction of Leatherwood Memorial Chapels of Brady. Korky was born December 11, 1916 in Brady to Karl Day Steffens and Ella (Keller) Steffens. He was an outstanding athlete at Brady High School, earning All Regional Honors as a Football Tailback. He was also honored as the best singer of Brady High School. This singing contest he later sponsored and served as the Master of Ceremonies in the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. After graduation in 1935, he attended Texas A&M on an athletic scholarship, where he played football with All American Legends John Kimbrough, Dick Todd and Joe Routt. He also played against such legends as Sammy Baugh, Davy O’Brien, Ky Aldrich, Ernie Koy, Sr. and other greats of the late 30’s. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1939 with a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He married Othrene Autry on May 25, 1941 in Coleman, Texas. After they were married, they were stationed at Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio where he coached football. He was called to active duty prior to the outbreak of WWII and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel by 1945. After the war he returned to Brady and entered the Florist profession with his father. In 1950 Korky was recalled to the U.S. Air Force to serve in the Korean War. He was stationed at Goodfellow A.F.B. where he was Group Commander, managing five squadrons, and later promoted to full Colonel. He returned to Brady in 1953 and resumed his career as a florist and civic leader. For many years he was the General Manager of the July Jubilee Association (a non-paying, year-round post) and Chairman of the Miss Heart of Texas Pageant. He has served on the Brady City Council, the Brady School Board President, President of the Brady Lions Club, Chaired the Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, Ole Hound Dog Athletic Booster Club and served as a Director and Vice President of the Texas State Florists Association. He was a third generation florist, owning and operating Steffens Flowers in Brady. He was a member of the Brady Presbyterian Church. Service to his country and Brady was his passion. A singer, showman and an expert master of ceremonies, Korky became a popular entertainer in Brady at countless civic programs over the years. He was often called on to sing at weddings and funerals. In 1961 he was honored as Brady’s Distinguished Citizen. In his spare time he loved to hunt, fish and play golf. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Othrene Steffens of Brady; two sons, Craig Steffens and Karlton Steffens and wife Sandra all of Brady; grandchildren, Kelly Wharrie and husband Rob of Round Rock and Karly Steffens of Austin, Kacy Montenegro and husband Mark of Round Rock and Stacy Northcutt of Austin; and six great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Coleman from 1958 to 1985. She moved to Breckenridge in 1985, and was a member of The People’s Church in Breckenridge. Gail lived in Snyder for many years and moved to Colorado City following the death of her husband. She retired from the Mitchell County Hospital District and had recently moved to Odessa. She attended Westbrook Church of Christ. She was born Martha Jean Harwell on November 21, 1927 in Brownwood, Texas, a daughter of Harden Dorbandt Harwell and Cora Mae Casbeer Harwell. She grew up in Lampasas and San Angelo, graduating from San Angelo High School. Martha moved to Coleman in 1945. On April 14, 1946 she married Roy A. Autry, Jr. in Coleman and he preceded her in death on September 13, 2006. Martha worked in the family newspaper business, The Chronicle and Democrat-Voice, for many years in advertising, sales and as a news writer. She was a member of the United Christian and Presbyterian Church (UCPC). He served in the National Guard and retired from the United States Post Office after 30 years of service. He volunteered his time with Meals on Wheels, Loaves and Fishes, Holy Name Society, was Ushering Eucharist Minister and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. | Malcolm Wesley Downey, 94 years of age, the son of the late Patrick Wesley and Fannie Fern Wilson Downey, was born September 13, 1912 in Leaday, Texas and passed away in Coleman at his residence,2007. Malcolm graduated from Gouldbusk High School and farmed before enlisting in the army in 1942. He married Zelma Sikes on November 5, 1942 in Coleman, Texas. After serving in the Army during WWII, the couple returned to Coleman to farm and later moved to Port Lavaca, Texas for 10 years. Returning to settle in Coleman, Malcolm worked for the White Auto, Western Auto and Agricultural Soil Conservation & Stabilization (ASCS). He retired in 1993 to enjoy spending his time raising sheep and maintaining their place. | Leland H. Martin was born in Runnels County on January 9, 1929, to Wallace E. and Mattie P. Martin. As a child he moved to Coleman County where he grew up in the Brown Ranch Community. He graduated from Mozelle High School in 1946. He married Dorothy Lee Dalton in Coleman on June 15, 1946. He served many years as a Sunday school teacher, department director and Sunday school superintendent. He served over 50 years as a ordained deacon at Harmony Baptist Church in Fisk, Melwood Baptist Church and Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood where he was currently a member. Leland was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Lee Dalton, and baby daughter, Claudia Darlene Martin. Also, sister Stella Moore and brothers, Fred Martin and J.M. Martin. He lived in south Coleman County where he and his brother-in-law, T.J. Dalton, Jr., operated the Dalton Dairy. In 1969 he began in the cattle mineral business in Brownwood, moving there in 1974. He later owned and operated L&M Mineral Company. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Gary McConaughey of Spring, Brenda and Randy Yancy of Huntsville, and Marcia Jill and Bill Wells of Brownwood; granddaughters and husbands, Kandra and Jason Foster and Tanna and Matt Lawson, all of Spring; grandsons, Kirk McConaughey of Houston and Calvin and JoAnn Wells of Stephenville; four great-grandchildren, Payton, Miles, Kamryn and Blayne Foster of Spring; one sister, Winnie Pearl Nelson of Brownwood; four brothers, Herbert Martin of Brownwood, Curtis Martin of Abilene, Billy Joe Martin of Hattiesburg, Miss. and Roneal Martin of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, N.T. | Floyd Allen Goodgion age 88 passed away Monday, June 11, 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Services will be Friday at 2:00 PM at the Trickham Union Church with Jack Yates officiating. Interment will follow at the Trickham Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna. Floyd was born July 23, 1918 in Trickham, Texas to the late Travis Homer and Bessie Rebecca Tarter Goodgion. He was raised in Trickham where he attended schools and graduated from Santa Anna High School. On May 9, 1952 Floyd married Gay Moody Outlaw in Clovis, NM and they celebrated 41 years of marriage. Gay preceded him in death in 1991. Floyd was a combat veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II with Company G, 110th Infantry Regiment. He received his BS Degree from Daniel Baker College in Brownwood and his Master Degree from McMurry University in Abilene. Floyd was a long time grade school principal in Clovis, New Mexico retiring in 1980 and was a member of the Baptist Church. SURVIVORS 2 Daughters - Caroline A. | Betty Ann Henderson, age 77, entered into rest Wednesday, May 30, 2007 in Del Rio, Texas. She was born on January 15, 1930 in Santa Anna, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Theodore James and Louise Boyd McCaughan and sister, Margaret Karthauser. She will always be remembered for her enduring faith, strong will and her comforting guidance and wisdom. She was a member of First Christian Church and found pleasure in reading and studying the Bible. She always enjoyed life to the fullest and loved bragging about her children and grandchildren. She was an avid sports fan whose favorite team was the San Antonio Spurs. Her other hobbies included playing cards with the girls, sharing her cooking with others and spending time with her beloved dog, Tino. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Diane and husband, Richard Guzy, Liz and husband, Lonnie Ricks and son, Rob and wife, Sharon Henderson. Also left to cherish her memory are cousin, Sharon and husband, Tom Barrett; five wonderful grandchildren, Michelle and husband, Philip George, Sarah Henderson Christel and husband, Lars Gustafson, Ryan and wife, Julie Ricks, Beth Guzy and fiancée, Caleb Sallee and two amazing great-grandchildren, Caden and Tyler George. | Marilyn Darnell Johnson, 44, of Talpa and former resident of Cedar Creek, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at her residence. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2007 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy Tomlinson officiating, assisted by Rev. Ferris Akins and Rev. Mike Schwartz. The body will be cremated. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman, Texas. Marilyn Darnell Johnson was born April 3, 1963 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the daughter of Carl H. Darnell and Brenda Wallis Darnell. She grew up in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School. She received her Bachelors degree from Stephen F. Austin University and her Masters degree from the University of South Carolina. She married Tony Johnson on February 21, 1990 in Charleston, West Virginia. She was employed with the West Virginia Library Commission for 15 years and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission since 2001. She moved to Talpa in 2001 and was a member of the Texas Library Association and Wildwood Baptist Church in Cedar Creek. Survivors include her husband, Tony Johnson of Talpa; her parents, Carl and Brenda Darnell of Talpa; two step-sons, James Jerry Johnson and Tony Ross Johnson, Jr., both of West Virginia; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Karla and Vinson Higginbotham of Talpa, Cynthia and Tommy Thomason of Abilene; her grandparents, Calvin and Louise Bynum of Abilene and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kenneth Farrell and Samuel and Virginal Darnell. Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Stevens Funeral Home. | Mr. Earl Ward, 89 of Coleman, died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at the Coleman County Medical Center. He was born on June 5, 1918 in Lawton, Oklahoma to the late Earl Ward Sr. and Henryetta Ward. He served as a United States Marine during WWII and retired from the propane gas business. Earl is survived by a very special friend, Mrs. Virginia Brannon of Coleman; daughter, Marilyn Krueger of Papillion, Nebraska; and two sons, Jim Ward of Huntsville, Texas and Mike Ward of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
